Hi friends, I’m still here. Sorry for the long hiatus.
I want to get back into the weekly-ish schedule, and I’ll start by catching up on new things and a few updates.
I’m moving to London
Sarah (my partner) is in an awesome graduate program at the Royal College of Art, so we’re relocating in January. There’s a lot up in the air right now but I’m definitely excited to explore the UK + Europe once COVID blows over (fingers crossed). I think the biggest immediate challenge will be paring down my life/gear and finding enough “city” clothes to get by 😂.
Summer Things
Ruby Tüby was a 25-mile, self-supported, tube-only, river trip. Ruby Horsethief is a 25-mile stretch of the Colorado River that runs from Loma, Colorado to the Westwater put-in in Utah. It's a popular river, and mostly flatwater. We decided to tackle it in an overnight, taking everything we needed in tubes. Totally normal stuff.
Training for my first ultra-marathon
This summer I decided I needed a stretch goal, fitness wise. I signed up for my first ultra, the Dead Horse 50k. Although I would consider my “base” fitness much higher than most folks, I’ve never even run a marathon before. Had some great training days on the High Lonesome Loop, Pawnee-Buchanan Pass Loop, and the Four Pass Loop (pic above), all bucket-list CO adventures.
Last weekend I ran my first 50k in a time of 4:05, finishing 7th overall (out of 250). This was significantly faster than my goal of around 4:30, so I’m pretty stoked. I know there are some gnarly trail races up in Scotland so I’m gonna have to figure out how to stay in shape in London.
I built a few things
Always hacking on stuff :)
Another Puffy Jacket is a sometimes useful, sometimes funny gear site. It has a bunch of my personal favorites, as well as user submissions and ridiculous gear choices. Hopefully it’ll give you a laugh and maybe some ideas. I built it in Webflow, using Airtable + Zapier to handle the user submissions.
Crux Academy launched this week. Think Masterclass, but focused on the outdoors, with courses for adventure planning, fly fishing, trail running and more. There’s quite a bit going on behind the scenes but this is another site I built in Webflow.
I made a bunch of updates to my personal site, primarily around case studies, as I think about next moves and where I want to go career wise (both London and general future related). If anyone has the inside line on interesting senior product design positions (remote or London-based), let me know!
Hope you’re staying safe and healthy. I’ll try and keep a more regular schedule going forward…
As always, feel free to reach out with ideas, feedback, or stuff you think I should talk about via email, Instagram, or Twitter.
If you liked this, it’d mean a lot to me if you’d share it with someone else you think might like enjoy getting this in their inbox. Forward it to a friend!
Cheers,
Kyle
