Great summary of this feeling! I've had it many times myself - searching for who I am when I can't run. Just had a magical morning run myself coming down Lions Lair in Boulder after suffering a bad fall a few weeks ago which left me unsteady. Coming back feels good!
So happy for your recovery! Sometimes, though, it just won't come ... I woke up about 10 years ago with weird sensations in my legs. Went away. Came back. Eventually diagnosed as a spinal problem (spondylolisthesis). Got angry. Got depressed. Got worse. Tried to climb mountains anyway, failed.
It's been a long long journey, but now my spine is stable, and I'm (re-)building strength. I don't climb outside any more, I don't go on SAR missions, and that fills me with sadness - but I'm getting to acceptance. Maybe that counts as recovery, too.
